How Covid 19 Gave Me a Much Needed Wake Up Call and Time to Breathe

Updated: Aug 19, 2025

Covid 19 changed the world in ways we never expected. It halted everyday activities and transformed our daily routines. At first, I was frustrated. I lost my jobs, stopped socializing, and missed out on my passions. No snowboarding, no school, no gym to relieve my stress.

However, as time went on, I realized this pause brought unexpected benefits. I began to slow down, breathe, and rediscover what I truly loved. This time allowed me to connect with friends and explore new interests.

The Initial Shock

When the pandemic struck, I felt lost. As a 22-year-old photography major at SFCC, my life revolved around my studies, part-time jobs, and outdoor adventures. When I learned that classes were moving online, I was devastated. I remember sitting in my favorite coffee shop, latte in hand, feeling like my world was turning upside down.

The loss of income from my jobs hit hard, too. The pandemic left millions jobless, with about 22 million Americans unemployed at its peak. I was among those feeling the sting of financial instability and uncertainty.

Finding New Ways to Connect

After sulking for weeks, I realized that even though I lost many things, I still had my health, family, and friends. So, I decided to adapt. I discovered FaceTime and began scheduling virtual hangouts with friends across the globe.

We played online games and watched movies together. One of my favorite nights included a virtual trivia game where we each shared fun facts about ourselves. I found joy in the laughter we shared, which I sorely missed. Connecting this way helped us all feel less isolated during the lockdown.

Rediscovering My Passions

With more time on my hands, I started a blog—a goal I had always put off. Writing became an outlet to express myself and document my journey.

I also picked up my camera again, exploring my neighborhood's beauty. I found joy in capturing simple moments, like the way sunlight streamed through the trees or the arrival of spring flowers. One morning, I spent two hours photographing flowers, returning home with over 100 photos to edit. The practice reignited my passion for photography and made me more aware of my surroundings.

A New Perspective on Education

Transitioning to online classes opened my eyes to the value of education. I had previously taken it for granted, thinking I had all the time in the world. With the pandemic unfolding, I realized how many people would appreciate the chance to learn.

I changed my approach to studying and set personal goals. I created a structured study schedule, which helped foster discipline. I became more motivated and engaged—ultimately completing assignments well before deadlines. This shift helped me maintain focus during uncertain times.

Embracing the Slow Down

Covid 19 forced me to slow down and appreciate the little moments in life. I had been racing through life, but the pandemic encouraged me to hit pause.

I began practicing mindfulness and meditation. These practices allowed me to stay grounded during tough times, making me more aware of the present. I learned to savor a warm cup of tea or indulge in a good book on evenings when distractions loomed.

The Importance of Gratitude

Through this period, gratitude emerged as a key lesson. I started a gratitude journal, committing to writing down three things I was thankful for each day. Some days it was simple pleasures, like enjoying a sunny morning or chatting with a friend.

This daily practice shifted my mindset. Instead of focusing on what I lost, I learned to appreciate what remained. Research indicates that practicing gratitude can improve mental health and well-being. I realized that while the pandemic took many things, it gifted me time and perspective.

Looking Ahead

As we slowly emerge from the pandemic, I feel hopeful about the future. I appreciate the lessons Covid taught me and intend to carry those insights forward.

I plan to deepen my connections, pursue my passions, and embrace a slower pace. It's okay to pause life and prioritize the things that genuinely matter.

Final Thoughts

Covid 19 was a wake-up call that I didn’t know I needed. It taught me the importance of slowing down and re-evaluating what brings me joy. While the pandemic posed significant challenges, it also opened doors to new opportunities and perspectives.

To anyone feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to breathe. Embrace the time you have and explore new paths. Life is a journey, and sometimes the detours lead to the most beautiful destinations.

Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I hope you find moments of clarity and joy amid uncertainty.

Stay safe, stay connected, and keep exploring!
